Marijuana strains | must know

There are typically three different types of marijuana strains: Indica, Sativa, and Ruderalis. You might have come across their names and wondered about their differences.

Cannabis Indica

Indica strains can be found in India, as well as in Afghanistan and Pakistan. They are characterized by wide, dark brown leaves and early flowering. The plant itself is relatively small compared to cannabis sativa but yields larger crops. This makes cannabis indica a preferred choice for many growers. Indica is known for its potency, resulting in a heavy high, often referred to as a “stone.” It tends to induce a quiet and sedating effect on consumers, making it ideal for relaxing activities like watching Netflix during the evening.

Cannabis Sativa

Sativa strains, on the other hand, are typically found in eastern Asia. They have narrower leaves compared to indicas and a slightly lighter green color. Sativa plants are usually larger than indica plants and produce thinner, longer buds. Although the yields are not as substantial as with indica, sativa offers a more uplifting effect when smoked. It is considered a daytime high, allowing users to remain productive and functional while enjoying its effects.

Cannabis Ruderalis

Ruderalis strains are commonly found in eastern and central Europe, as well as Russia. They have low levels of THC but higher levels of CBD. Ruderalis plants are small with large leaves and reach maturity quickly. They do not require a 12/12 light cycle to mature and flower, as they can start flowering immediately after germination. While not as popular among cannabis growers due to their low THC levels, Ruderalis is easy to grow and has been used in Mongolian and Russian folk medicine to treat depression.

Cross-bred strains

Selective breeding has led to the creation of various cannabis strains by cross-breeding different varieties, such as sativa and indica. This has resulted in hundreds of different strains over the past few decades, each with its own unique characteristics. Examples of cross-bred strains include Shiva, Master Kush, Acapulco Gold, Sour Diesel, and Pineapple Express.

THC levels in marijuana strains

Marijuana strains vary in THC levels, with higher levels resulting in stronger strains. THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the chemical compound responsible for the psychoactive effects of marijuana. While seed banks may provide information on THC levels, it may sometimes be over-exaggerated to boost sales of particular strains.
